How to Use Tabelog and Booking Sites in Japan (2026)

Quick answer: use Tabelog to discover restaurants and read Japan-native review signal, Google Maps to solve routing and entrance logistics, and the restaurant’s official website to identify its authorized booking path. A visible restaurant is not necessarily bookable, a selected time is not necessarily confirmed, and a difficult booking path is not evidence that the restaurant is better.

Why the same restaurant looks different across services

Each service can hold a different combination of listing data, booking inventory, translated information and user reports. One page may show the restaurant but no online seats; another may expose a venue-authorized booking form; a map listing may display useful directions without controlling the reservation.

Tool Best used for What it does not prove
Tabelog Japan-native discovery, photos, local review context and participating reservations That every listed restaurant has online inventory
Google Maps Route, entrance, neighborhood, recent visitor photos and map context That hours or booking details are venue-confirmed
Restaurant website Authorized booking route, current course and venue policy That a submitted request has been accepted
TableCheck Venue-specific booking when the restaurant links to it That every TableCheck restaurant appears in broad search
Premium service Participating omakase or fine-dining inventory and course terms That the fee or cancellation policy matches another service

Tabelog now has an official multilingual app

Older guides saying there is no official English-friendly Tabelog app are outdated. Tabelog’s current multilingual app supports restaurant discovery, filtering, saved lists, immediate openings and online booking for eligible restaurants. Its official page reported more than 900,000 restaurant listings in January 2026, and Kakaku.com announced two million cumulative downloads in May 2026.

The important limit is “eligible restaurants.” No displayed slot can mean unavailable, not released, not offered online or incompatible with the selected conditions. It does not automatically mean the restaurant is closed.

Instant reservation and reservation request are different

An instant reservation ends with explicit confirmation; a request still needs acceptance or another action. Tabelog also documents a request-reservation service for eligible phone-bookable restaurants in its Japanese app. That service can contact the restaurant on the user’s behalf, but the result may be unsuccessful and is not immediate.

Traveler: “The form accepted my details, so the table is ours?”

Yuki: “Only if the final status says confirmed. Save the email or reservation number and check whether the screen says request, pending or confirmed.”

Do not reduce every card screen to a booking fee

Card verification, an authorization hold, course prepayment, a cancellation guarantee and a service fee are different conditions. The correct amount and refund rule are the ones displayed by the venue or authorized service on the final screen. Do not import a fee quoted in an old forum post into a different service or restaurant.

A five-step workflow that avoids repeated searching

  1. Choose the area and meal: station, cuisine, party size, budget and time.
  2. Use Tabelog for discovery: save three candidates rather than one.
  3. Use Maps for logistics: confirm branch, entrance and travel time.
  4. Open the official venue page: follow its authorized booking route and read the course, card and cancellation terms.
  5. Stop at confirmation: save proof of the reservation and keep one comparable backup.

Illustrative scenario: conflicting Sunday information

Tabelog shows a restaurant, a map listing looks open, and one booking service shows no Sunday times. Instead of voting among three screens, open the restaurant’s official site. If it identifies a booking service, use that route. If the venue’s current Sunday policy remains unclear, choose a saved nearby backup rather than building the evening around uncertain data.

This scenario explains the verification process and is not a live claim about a restaurant.

Traveler checklist

  • Correct restaurant branch and official website
  • Date, time, party size and course
  • Instant confirmation or request
  • Card hold, prepayment, cancellation or service fee wording
  • Booking name and confirmation number
  • Last order and arrival instructions
  • One same-area, same-cuisine backup

Frequently asked questions

Is Tabelog available in English?

Yes. Tabelog has a current official multilingual app for international visitors. See the OnlyLocal Tabelog app guide for the current feature set.

Why is a restaurant on Tabelog but not bookable?

Discovery coverage and online-booking inventory are separate. The venue may not participate, may use another authorized route, or may not expose your selected conditions online.

Is TableCheck better than Tabelog?

They solve different jobs. Tabelog is broad discovery plus participating bookings; TableCheck is especially useful when a restaurant’s official website links to its booking page. Read the OnlyLocal TableCheck guide.

Should I trust Tabelog or Google Maps hours?

Use both as discovery clues, then prefer the restaurant’s current official notice for a trip-critical meal. Keep a backup because even official information cannot guarantee live seats.
